    1976 - Nikusei (Human Voice / A Natural Voice)
    Kazuki Tomokawa - Nikusei ['76 Japan Avant-Folk]

second album by avant/acid folk singer Kazuki Tomokawa, one of my favourite japanese folk singers next to Kan Mikami

the title Nikusei means Human Voice and what an emotional voice this guy has! sometimes you wonder where he gets all that air from Kazuki Tomokawa is a prolific Japanese avantgarde-folk singer, poet, and often described as a "screaming philosopher" due to his idiosyncratic singing style. His music has been used in the films of cult directors Takashi Miike and Koji Wakamatsu, and he also appears in person in Miike's Izo (2004).

    from popsike:

Tomokawa Kazuki: Nukusei (Harvest YC-8006 1976) (Record: Mint/ Jacket: Mint) Comes with 4-paged booklet. This was Tomokawas second record he released. Great copy of this early Tomokawa record. He is undoubtedly the unequaled master of possessed song-spirit. Here the young Tomokawa wails and screams emotionally hard enough in order to strip the paint of the walls. Nevertheless at times he gets quite emotional and laid back in order to hush his haunting demons to sleep. Just a splendid piece of Japanese acid folk and chant exorcism. Tomokawas music is violent, emotionally charged with insane screaming modes, piercing sensitivity, cathartic rhythmic purge, thrashing acoustic guitar aesthetic and harsh, reflecting the atmosphere of the bleak northern prefecture of Aomori. Hardly turns up these days. Stunningly great psychedelic-acid-avant-outsider folk music. For fans of Mikami Kan, Jandek, acid folk, Iuchi Kengo, J.A.Seazer, psych heads all around and adventurous music geeks. Highly recommended original pressing in top condition. Very rare early (2nd) Tomokawa disc. Hardly, if never, resurfaces. Act smooth and swift. This record will certainly enhance your sorry ass existence.

    -----------------------------------------

Chances are, if you've strolled into the store on any given Saturday night over the last six months or so, you will probably have had a chance to hear at least part of an album by Japanese folk singer Kazuki Tomokawa. My interest in his work is becoming a long-running obsession, and though I recognize that, for some, his sound world may be impenetrable, I've been heartened by the fact that every single one of his albums I've played over the last half-year has been bought from out of the CD player before it had a chance to finish.
Tomokawa is possessed of an emotional intensity so fierce and uncompromising as to brand nearly any other singer-songwriter as a phony in comparison. It is, however, an intensity that is so completely beguiling and seductive, if not outright addictive, that perhaps it's no surprise that his work resonates so frequently with our shoppers.
Tomokawa, a sometime horse bookie, poet, and painter, has had a recording career that dates back to the early-'70s. Like Kan Mikami, with whom he is frequently compared, Tomokawa reaped many of the benefits of Japan's folk boom with strong albums sales into the '80s. After a spell of inactivity, his recording career was resurrected in the '90s with a string of incredible albums for Japan's leading underground label, PSF. Celebrated and hyper-violent cult film director Takashi Miike peppered a number of his films with Tomokawa songs, which culminated in a star turn for the Tomokawa himself in 2005's Izo, where he essentially plays a one-man Greek chorus as wandering bard.
With his profile once again in ascension, PSF has seen fit to reissue a handful of their classic Tomokawa back catalog with new artwork and oversized LP-style cardboard jackets. Hanabana No Kashitsu is a good place to begin delving into Tomokawa's work, as it's shorn of any superfluous backing or instrumentation. All you get is an unadorned and simply-played acoustic guitar accompanying one of the world's most expressive singers; marvel as Tomokawa's voice swoops from harrowing heights of phonetic rupture to the loveliest of heart-rending melodic simplicity.

On this album, Tomokawa returns to some familiar obsessions the possibilities of the nursery rhyme form, musical settings for the poems of Japans tragic symbolist poet Chuya Nakahara, and deceptively opaque natural imagery.

Compilation of new and previously released tracks from Kazuki Tomokawa, Japans god of emotionally transcendent song. Tomokawas convulsive and passionate songs have recently graced films by two of Japans most notorious directors, legendary underground director Koji Wakamatsu (whose career dates back to the early sixties) and Takashi Miike, the current enfant terrible of weird and ultra-violent genre flicks.
Tomokawas appearance playing himself in Miikes time-travelling samurai vengeance movie IZO in particular has stunned festival audiences the violent, cathartic and irrational beauty of his songs chimes perfectly with the films mood.

Twelve tracks in total, including Pistol the amazing title-track from IZO, previously only available as part of the PSF 13 CD boxset (PSFD-134 / 146). Also includes three entirely new tracks, and three radical re-recordings.

Kazuki Tomokawa / Live 2005 Osaka Banana Hall
    Release Date: 12/21/2005

Kazuki Tomokawas gigs are now a lot less frequent than they used to be, and his August 2005 Osaka date was his first in Kansai for quite some time. But accompanied by his long-time trio of Toshi Ishizuka on percussion and Masato Nagahata on piano, this was, in Tomokawas own estimation, the best gig that this trio has ever played. It was far too good a performance to be left to fading memories, and Tomokawa himself talked PSF into releasing it. Sixteen tracks of his patented soul-folk, emotionally charged and devastating as all hell.

Limited to six hundred copies, the set comes housed in a heavy-duty, LP sized box, with accompanying booklet and postcard. It contains all ten of the solo Tomokawa studio albums previously released by PSF. Three exclusive bonus disks are also included (these will not be available separately from the box). The first is a compilation of classic, original tracks from Tomokawas first three little-heard albums, released between 75 and 77 on Tokuma. The second bonus disk is made up of new musical settings for poems by the tragic Japanese symbolist poet Chuya Nakahara (1907-1937). Tomokawa has drawn deeply upon the modernist mania of these poems throughout his career, constantly revisiting them on record and live, and these new readings are the most mellifluous yet. The final disk, Satoru is an album of new recordings with his telepathically sensitive long-term group (which features Toshi Ishizuka of Vajra on drums), including a clutch of deeply resonant new classics that Tomokawa outed at his first ever overseas appearance at the Le Weekend Festival in Scotland.
